Colby Receives Scholarship Offer

Julz Colby was the first member of the class of 2021 to join the newly formed team back in fourth grade. Even at that age, she was an unusual athlete who was a natural at basketball. She looked up to older Firecrackers like Emily Esposito, Allie Clement, and Ashley Briggs and dreamed of earning her own scholarship for a college education. Many schools have been recruiting Colby over the past two years and last week her dream came true as she was offered a scholarship to play New York Institute of Technology on Long Island in New York.

Colby is a 5’6” senior who can defend, score, pass, and run the show. Many athletic teams have learned the hard way over the past seven years that it is nearly impossible to trap or press her. At Oxford Hills High School, she led her team to a AA state championship over Scarborough in 2019. Colby was outstanding in all facets of the game and stepped up on the big stage with a AA record 34 points. For the season, she averaged 18.2 points, 3.3 assists, and 3.2 steals per game and was named 1st team All-State by the Bangor Daily News and also All-State by the Portland Press Herald. Colby was also named the Sun Journal All Region Player of the Year.

New York Institute of Technology is a Division 2 school coached by Kenny Parnham. In the 2018-2019 season the Bears went 23-9 and won an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as a result of winning the East Coast Conference(ECC).
