Stonehill lands commitment from 2016 Kelsey Shaw

KelseyShaw-2015MDI star guard commits to Skyhawks, after considering other NE-10 offers

Kelsey Shaw, of Bar Harbor, is a talented player and a tireless worker.  Last year she primarily played on the Maine Firecrackers regional team and when she was moved to the National team in July she suffered an untimely injury that prevented her from playing at her full potential. This past spring, Shaw was healthy and played at a high level, drawing the interest of many division I, II, and III colleges in New England and beyond.

On Monday, the 5’10” Shaw verbally committed to head coach Trisha Brown of the Stonehill College Skyhawks. Located is Easton, MA, Stonehill is a long standing member of the highly competitive Northeast-10 conference. Shaw was also offered scholarships by Assumption and St. Michael’s.

Shaw can shoot the three, get to the rim, and also has a very nice mid-range pull up. When opponents have the ball, she is adept at defending on the perimeterand in the post.

“This is a wonderful day for the Shaw family, for Mt Desert Island High School, and for the Firecracker program,” Firecracker coach Brian Clement said. “Kelsey has earned her scholarship the old fashioned way – through sacrifice, commitment, and a lot of hard work. She is a tough competitor and a wonderful teammate. I am thrilled to see her dream come true and I believe she has all the tools to be a special player in the Northeast-10.”

Shaw and teammate Sierra Tapley, committed to Maine, led Mount Desert Island High School to an undefeated regular season in Maine Class B East before being upset in the first round of the playoffs by Gardiner. The smooth lefty averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists per game on her way to being named to the All -Big East First Team.  She was also named Big East Player of the Week three times this past season and was McDonald’s Player of the week once. A National Honor student as well, Shaw is currently ranked in the top 10 in her class academically.

“Kelsey paid her dues and waited her turn to play on the top Firecracker team,” said Clement. “She commuted 6 hours, round trip, twice a week for the opportunity to compete in our program and made the most of it when elevated to our National team. I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

Stonehill is coming off a 25-5 season (18-3 in the Northeast-10), and finished their 2014-15 campaign as the 13th-ranked NCAA Division II program in the country. The Skyhawks also won the 2014-15 Northeast-10 regular season championship.
