Firecrackers team up in support of Preble Street shelter
Preble Street programs meet the needs of 500 hungry and homeless people everyday
The seventh-grade Maine Firecrackers came together on Monday, June 20th, to donate clothing and snacks to Preble Street in Portland. The mission of Preble Street is to provide accessible barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty, and to advocate for solutions to these problems.
The team decided they wanted to fulfill their community service commitment as Firecrackers by gathering clothing from their individual communities and donating them to those in need. Team parents contacted the shelter and made arrangements for a late afternoon drop off.
The players gathered in a park in order to sort the various types of clothing they had collected prior to delivering the donations. The shelter was extremely grateful for the large donation and our young players seemed to grasp the significance of the help they were lending to those who use the shelter’s valuable resources. It was a beautiful day and a great lesson in recognizing how fortunate we are and how important it is to share with others.
