Class of 2019 Making an Impact in College
Firecracker Mackenzie Holmes of # 21 ranked Indiana received Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, averaging 18.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game. The 6-foot-3 Gorham, Maine, native had a team-high 22 points against Nicholls State.
Holmes is the first freshman to earn the weekly award for the Hoosiers since Jaelynn Penn, who won the award in back-to-back weeks in January of 2018.
Fellow Firecracker freshman Anna DeWolfe is in the starting lineup for Fordham, who nearly upset #16 Notre Dame behind 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists from DeWolfe in her first collegiate game.
Faith Blethen of George Washington also started in her first game, playing 31 minutes and grabbing 6 rebounds in a win vs Villanova. In her second game Blethen led GW in scoring with 16 points in a loss to Princeton.
Katie Whitmore of St Joe’s was called upon for key defensive minutes in a tight contest with 5 minutes left in tight win against Curry college in her game and Kenzy Ouellette also played significant (12) minutes in St. A’s 80-69 win over Bloomfield. Ouelette was 2-3 from the floor for 5 points to go along with 3 rebounds.
The final member of the Firecracker class of ‘19, Gracie Martin, is sitting out at Harvard as a result of her ACL injury.
