Longtime Firecracker Katie McCrum Commits to Colby
Katie McCrum made it official yesterday when she received her acceptance letter from Colby College in Waterville, ME. The Saco, ME native has been one of the Maine Firecrackers best all around players from the inception of her team seven years ago. She is often assigned the task of defending opponent’s best players and played a key role in numerous Firecracker wins over the years, including the AAU D2 National Runner Up run from 2010. Her success for the Firecrackers got her the attention of many colleges of all three divisions but in the end Colby’s academics, proximity, and basketball tradition were the best fit.
McCrum made an immediate large impact on her Thornton Academy team as a freshman, winning the starting point guard position and being named to the SMAA All Rookie team. She also hit 2 critical free throws in the first round of the playoffs against Marshwood with second left on the clock that secured the first TA playoff victory in many years. After missing most of her Sophomore year with a knee injury, the 5’7” lefty was named to the SMAA First Team and All Defensive team as a Junior while leading the league in assists (4.4) and averaging 10.3 points per game.
A three sport athlete, she has also excelled on the lacrosse field and was named all-conference in soccer the past two years. Off the court, McCrum is one of the top students in her class and was recognized by being selected for National Honor Society.
Colby is coached by Augusta, ME native Julie Veilleux, who had a standout career at Cony before earning a scholarship to the University of Maine at Orono. Colby is off to one of their best starts ever with six straight wins to begin the season before falling to Bowdoin last week.
Congrats to Katie and her family!
