2017 forward Danasia Fennie lands scholarship offer from Boston University
Fast-rising Sophomore made unofficial visit to Patriot League school
Danasia Fennie didn’t begin playing basketball seriously until 8th grade, but the 5’11” Sophomore has caught the attention of many college coaches this Spring. Fennie played especially well in the April viewing period in front of over 75 division 1 and 2 coaches and has been invited to several schools since then. Friday her dream came true when she drove to Comm
onwealth Ave to meet with the Boston University coaches and was offered a full scholarship to study and play basketball for the Terriers beginning in the 2017-2018 season.
At Westbrook HS she was named to the SMAA All-Defensive team after averaging 8.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game. Firecracker coach Brian Clement said, “Danasia is a special young woman who rebounds well and is one of the best shot blockers the state has produced in many years. She is still developing her offensive skills but is
a tremendous leaper and the staff at BU loves her athleticism, coachablilty, and upside. She does some things on the court that are unique, she is a great teammate, and she is also a strong student. This is a special day for Danasia and the Firecracker program.” Firecracker Co-Founder Don Briggs added, “I am thrilled for Danasia and grateful to those that came before her that opened many doors for our current players. The class of 2014 put the Firecrackers on the map and the class of 2015 furthered the reputation of our program that gets our current players so much exposure. Danasia has earned this and those that went before her helped make this possible.”
All-time high school and University of Maine career leading scorer Cindy Blodgett has played a key role in the recruitment of Fennie. Blodgett is currently the 10th all-time leading scorer in NCAA history and a four time All-American. Blodgett has been regularly recruiting Firecracker players for the past 4 years at Maine, URI, and BU.
Boston University is now a member of the prestigious and high academic Patriot League after moving from the America East Conference. From an academic standpoint, the Patriot League is generally considered 2nd only to the IVY schools for division one institutions in the Northeast. Head Coach Katy Steding was the Chevrolet Player of the Game in Stanford’s first National Championship in 1990 before winning an Olympic Gold on the women’s “Dream Team” and then moving onto the WNBA. She is entering her second season at the helm of the Terriers. Steding and Blodgett originally met as teammates for the WNBA Sacramento Monarchs.
