14u off to 2-0 start at AAU National Championships in Orlando
Mackenzie Holmes gets the Firecrackers started with 27 points and 14 rebounds in Game 1
The 14u Firecrackers are 2-0 in pool play at the AAU National Championships in Orlando, FL, after a couple of decisive wins on Thursday.
In Game 1, Mackenzie Holmes led three players in double figures with 27 points in a 68-17 rout of the South Carolina Sparks. Faith Blethen and Anna DeWolfe had 10 points each, and Alex Hart added 9. Holmes also pulled down 14 rebounds. Eva Mazur spearheaded a strong defensive effort with 7 steals.
Game 2 was an absolute clinic on pressure half court defense and running the break with crisp passing and unselfish play. The 14u squad scored 52 first half points on 19 assists, and rolled to a 74-15 win against Treasure Coast (FL).
Holmes again led the way with 22 points. Anna DeWolfe had 15 points and 8 assists and had some WOW moments passing the ball. Alex Hart and Eva Mazur, each with 6 points, provided the Firecrackers with great ball pressure against the Florida squad. Emme Poulin found her range with 3 three-pointers for 9 points. Faith Blethen, Sophie Glidden and Ally Turner rounded out the scoring with the remaining 16 points.
Marist, Villanova, Boston University, Vermont, Richmond, Virginia, and a slew of Florida schools have attended both Firecrackers games.
The final game of pool play, against Wolves Elite (OH), is slated for 1 PM on Friday at the HP Fieldhouse.
