Eight Firecrackers earn SMAA postseason honors
Esposito, Holmes and Willerson earn First Team All-Conference
The Southwestern Maine Activities Association (SMAA) announced its girl’s basketball All-Conference honors for the 2015-16 season on Tuesday. Eight Maine Firecrackers earned recognition, led by First Team selections Emily Esposito (Jr, Gorham), Mackenzie Holmes (Fr, Gorham) and Jess Willerson (Sr, McAuley).
Esposito recorded per game averages of 14.7 points, 4.3 steals, and 3.7 assists for Gorham. Holmes finished the regular season at 13.0 points and 10.4 rebounds (2nd in SMAA) per game. Willerson was the second leading scorer in the league with 17.6 points per game, while averaging 8.4 rebounds and shooting 73% from the free throw line.
Sophomore Alex Hart (Thornton) was the lone Firecracker selected to the Second Team. Sophomore Sophie Glidden (Scarborough) and Freshman McKenzy Ouellette (Deering) represented the Firecrackers as Third Team All-SMAA selections.
Hart finished third in the SMAA is assists (3.7) and sixth in steals (3.0) per game. Glidden scored 10 points per game for Scarborough, with her best games coming late in the season. Ouellette finished the season averaging 12.4 points, while making a league-best 3 three-point field goals per game, and shooting 90% from the free throw line.
Freshman Katie Whitmore (South Portland) was joined by Holmes and Ouellette on the SMAA All-Rookie Team.
Sophomore Eva Mazur (McAuley) and Hart were voted to the All-Defensive Team.
Mazur finished tops in the SMAA in steals at 6.2 per game, while also dishing out 3.8 assists.
