Duke coach Joann P. McCallie addresses the Firecracker players

Recently 25 of the Maine Firecrackers from 4th to 8th grade travelled to Boston to watch the Womens ACC match-up between Duke and Boston College. Not only did they get to see a great game, which Duke won 71-62, they also got to visit with Duke coach (and Maine native) Joann P. McCallie.

The game itself was a battle of top versus bottom in the ACC. Duke was able to hold of the upset bid of BC, but just barely. With just under 3 minutes to go, Duke was hanging onto a slender 61-60 lead. They were able to survive mainly due to the efforts of star sophomore, Chelsea Gray, who scored 8 of their last 10 points

After the game, Coach McCallie addressed the girls for 15 minutes. She told them that she had seen the Fircrackers play many times and that she was a “big fan” of the way they play. She encouraged the girls to never take the opposition lightly (a reference perhaps to the game they had just played) and to always play with heart and intensity. The Firecrackers should not be content just to be the best team in Maine – there are others all around the country that are working hard, but if the Firecrackers put the time in, then they can compete with them.

The girls also had the chance to meet and have photos taken with Duke players Elizabeth Williams and Chelsea Gray. Williams, a freshman, was the No.1 recruit in the nation in her class.
