When #1 seed McAuley met #2 seed Scarborough in the Western Maine Class A Finals the Maine Firecrackers were well represented with each team having 3 Firecracker participants. For McAuley it was sophomores Allie Clement and Olivia Smith, and freshman Vic Lux, and for Scarborough three freshman, Ashley Briggs, Sam Sparda, and Bailey Adams.
While McAuley went on to win the game and will represent Class A West in the State Final, for those involved in the Firecracker program, what ever the result, it was a very special moment. “These young ladies have played together for the past 4 years. They have shared a lot of blood, sweat, and tears over that time, competing around the country each spring and summer. It is a very humbling experience to look out on the floor, see how hard they play and how well they represent their respective High School teams”, said Don Briggs. “It is no coincidence that the commitment the young ladies make to each other and the sport allows them to have the success in both high school and AAU.”
“The fact that all of our freshmen and sophomores had significant roles, and a positive impact on their high schools teams this year, speaks volumes about the type of athlete and competitors they are. Once again, Coach Clement and I have been fortunate to be surrounded by such wonderful young ladies. They are tough, hard-nosed, intense teammates on the court and honor students in the classroom. Needless to say, we are looking forward to having the girls back together (9th and 10th grade) for the spring/summer AAU season, preparing another group of athletes (8th grade team) to enter high school, and by competing againse the best teams around New England and Nationally, to continue to raise the level of play”
